Newsletter | September 2025

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the September edition of our quarterly newsletter. The third quarter of 2025 has been a dynamic period for the Alliance, marked by new partnerships, key publications, and important milestones in our project portfolio. From welcoming the European Union as a donor to launching new initiatives with Sweden and expanding our work in Moldova, this quarter has underscored the growing momentum behind our mission. Our engagements at the WTO Public Forum and with our Private Sector Working Group have further strengthened the Alliance’s role as a platform where business, government, and development partners come together to make trade simpler, faster, and more inclusive.

Donor News

EU joins as new donor to the Alliance

We were thrilled to announce that the European Union has formally joined the Alliance as a donor, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive, responsible, and efficient trade. Our collaboration will support efforts to simplify and modernise cross-border trade processes, making them more transparent and accessible—particularly in least-developed countries. By collaborating with business and governments through our public-private partnership model, the EU will help strengthen supply-chain resilience, expand market access for SMEs, and advance sustainable development while implementing the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement.

Sweden launches three new regional trade reform initiatives

Sweden, through its International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and the Alliance announced three new regional programmes to accelerate trade reform across Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East–North Africa. The new initiatives represent a major step forward in the partnership between Sweden and the Alliance. By leveraging the Alliance’s unique public-private partnership model, they aim for pragmatic solutions based on private sector needs to reduce trade barriers, modernise and digitalise border operations, and foster more inclusive and sustainable economic growth across all three regions.

Trade facilitation as climate action: new CO study released

We were delighted to launch our new paper ‘Move Goods, Not Paper: Carbon impacts of digitalising trade procedures’, which explores how digitalising trade procedures can cut carbon emissions, using the IPPC ePhyto Solution as a case study. By analysing findings from 10 Alliance projects, it shows that adopting ePhytos significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the phytosanitary certification process — with cumulative global savings comparable to planting millions of trees. This publication underscores the Alliance’s commitment to leveraging trade facilitation solutions to address global challenges such as climate change.
